Breakfast did not happen without someone milking a cow and fetching eggs out in the barn. Our mom would spend most of her day in the kitchen preparing our family’s evening meal. After the meal someone still had to do the dishes by hand. Most of our food was grown or raised on the farm and it required physical activity to tend the garden and feed and care for the animals. Kids played hopscotch where all you needed was a rock, some chalk, and a side walk; or games of tag. We did not need to shed some lbs. we burned fat all day long.

Nowadays most of us have jobs in some air conditioned office building where most of our day is spent sitting in an office or attending some meeting. We may not even attend meetings anymore, technology brings meetings to us in most cases. Our activity consists of walking a few feet to the garage to get in our air conditioned car and drive to work. Breakfast consists of taking something out of the freezer and sticking it into the microwave and most times we eat it on the road. The majority of our food comes from the grocery store and may involve opening a can or reading preparation instructions. Most times we did not even eat our evening meal as a family. Most times it comes in a box and the dishes go into a dishwasher when we are done. Kids are seldom seen outdoors anymore, most of their time is spent with a joystick by a computer playing the latest video game. Is there any wonder we wake up one day and decide we need to shed some lbs? I think not, the more we make things convenient and easy, the more sedentary we get. How should we adjust?

We have always been able to adapt to our environments regardless of the changes before us. For most of us there is a gym within a few miles of home but don’t let that stop you; you can drive there. Better yet find something to do in your own back yard shovels, hoes, and rakes “oh my”! Take on some landscaping protects around the house that involve these wonderful implements. Plant yourself a small garden tilling, planting, weeding, and harvesting are all great outdoor activities that will help you shed some lbs. before you know it. For additional options think about other outdoor activities like canoeing, biking, or even fishing. You will spend some great quality time with the family and improve everyone’s health.
