Soda Pop — Good for Your Health?
Popular opinion is that “soda pop” is by definition unhealthy. But could this be a popular myth?
In the US, we have many flavored drinks and we call carbonated drinks “soda pop”. What gives soda pop its “fizz?” Carbonation.
The quality and different tastes of various carbonated drinks, including soft drinks, is caused by the amount of dissolved CO2 which causes carbonic acid in the drink. Click here for more carbonated water information.
In almost all soft drinks, carbonation is used to give these drinks their distinctive taste. That fizzy taste is caused by diluted carbonic acid, not, as many believe, by the bubbles.
Carbonated water, also known as sparkling water, is plain water into which CO2 gas has been dissolved, and is the number one ingredient of most “soft drinks” or “soda pop”.
In the past, such drinks were produced in the home by putting water in a seltzer bottle then adding CO2. Club soda, identical to plain carbonated water, may contain a small amount of salt or trace minerals. Home-made soda pop could taste more salty than normal because of these trace ingredients. Add some drops of concentrated flavors and you have good ole’ soda pop.
If it has enough mineral content, the drink is called sparkling water. At allfreightfree.com you can find a large assortment of calorie-free flavors to jazz up sparkling water with great tastes. Instead of drinking a greater amount of soda pops, this might offer a better option for your family.
Carbonated drinks marketed as diet soft drinks offer a calorie-free way to make sure your family drinks plenty of water; after all, we all know that the better drinks taste, the more kids will drink, and the more your kids drink, the healthier it is for your family.
If anyone in your family is an athlete, this flavored drink will also make sure they stay properly hydrated while exercising. This has been an extremely hot summer; in spite of the heat, for most college and high school players two-a-day football practices are already underway. Perhaps, football mom, you could provide the team different flavored carbonated drinks to make sure everyone drinks the amounts that they need and stays well hydrated. The kids, and possibly the coach, will love you. This could be a good project for the local booster club to take on.
The oppressive summer heat has made drinking water extremely important – in fact, it has made it a dangerous summer even for Texas which is used to hot summers. But we are not use to day after day of 100 plus temperature with high humidity and little infants and the elderly are especially vulnerable.
It is plain that not all soft drinks are identical. So, you and your family might find flavored carbonated drinks to be a good option; maybe your elderly neighbor might, too. We are, after all, our brother’s keeper.
