What to Expect from Plastic Surgery

There is a distinct difference between plastic surgery and cosmetic surgery according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.  The difference lies in the fact that  plastic surgery, also known as reconstructive surgery, normally allows for repairing abnormal structures of the body. These irregularities might have been caused by congenital defects, trauma, wounds and even tumors, like breast and skin cancer. Cosmetic surgery on the other hand is carried out to improve looks and boost self confidence by restoring or reshaping normal body structures.

Surprisingly, there are just as many men opting for this type of elective surgery, as there are women. Neck liposuction surgery is amongst the more popular procedures for men, which involves removing areas of fat and sculpting the neck to improve appearance. Quite often, additional facial surgery such as a facelift and liposuction under the chin will be performed simultaneously. The reasons given by men, who choose this type of surgery, range from looking at it as an investment in them selves to being related to their careers.

Many people feel that we live in a beauty, youth fixated culture and that this type of surgical procedure is almost necessary in order to be successful in both work and relationships. Nevertheless, while plastic surgery maybe a viable option for many, it might not be the choice of everyone. Each of us has a self image, a sense of how we consider we look to others. It has been established that folks who feel good about their self image are more than likely to be self confident, as well as more successful in both work and social situations. Those who are not satisfied tend to be uncomfortable, inhibited and less adept at holding their own in social situations.

As is the case with any specialized or general surgical procedure, you will need time to convalesce after the procedure. That time varies from one individual to the next and largely relies upon the form of procedure carried out. As well as allowing time for physical recuperation, there are also various emotional issues to take into account. Many physicians say that the psychological healing following plastic surgery together with the emotional recovery is usually something the patient has not considered and as such, they try to make sure to talk over this matter before all surgeries.

Although Aristotle at one time said that Beauty is a greater recommendation than any letter of introduction, that may not be the reality.  Obviously, there are many different reasons why someone may elect to have plastic surgery. Unfortunately, some of their expectations might be a little unrealistic. There are limits to what can be done by a plastic surgeon during a surgical procedure. It is important to remember there are numerous variables that must be considered, such as skin texture, age and even overall health. If someone is convinced that a face-lift will confer stunning good looks on them, then they may need to be reminded that their surgeon is working with skin, not clay. Although not the solution to lifes issues, it can improve a persons appearance and self-confidence, but only if their state of mind is positive before the procedure.
